With a view to the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 the Vienna Men’s Choral Society asked Johann Strauss II to compose a choral waltz for a ‘Special Summer Evening of Songs’. Strauss complied with the request and in the spring and summer of 1873 composed a new waltz, which was given the title Bei uns z’Haus (At Home with Us). Anton Langer, a writer who had been a friend of Strauss’s since they were young, wrote the lyrics, ‘Everywhere in Austria song resounds’ — a depiction of life in Vienna, the Imperial-Royal capital city and residence of the emperor.
