The quick polka So ängstlich sind wir nicht! is one of six dances arranged from the melodies of Johann Strauss’s operetta Eine Nacht in Venedig (A Night in Venice), which was first performed in Berlin on 3 October 1883. The title of the polka is taken from the refrain of the song sung by Agricola, the wife of Senator Stefano Barbaruccio, at the beginning of the second act (no. 8 in the piano edition). The melody to which this refrain is sung is used as the first theme of the middle section of the polka. Its second theme is derived from a duet performed by Annina and Agricola which is not included in the piano edition, ‘Überall Karneval!’ (Carnival is everywhere!). The two melodies of the outer sections of the polka are taken from the opening number of the first act, Pappacoda’s entrance song, ‘Ihr habet Euren Marcusplatz’ (You’ve got your Saint Mark’s Square). On 5 December 1883 the publication of the piano edition was advertised in the Fremden-Blatt newspaper. This suggests that the first performance of the quick polka So ängstlich sind wir nicht! was given in the autumn of 1883, probably after the first performance of the operetta in Vienna in the Theater an der Wien on 9 October, but before the publication of the piano edition on 5 December. The exact date of the polka’s first performance is not known.
