Johann Strauss II knew better than any other operetta composer how to arrange and utilize the melodies of his stage works as concert and dance music. This example was eagerly imitated by his colleagues well into the 20th century, albeit not with the same efficiency. Strauss (son) was a born dance composer. The fast polka «Tik-Tak» is like an ingenious mosaic of various melodies from the operetta «Die Fledermaus» (The Bat) and was performed in Strauss concerts soon after its premiere on April 5, 1874 at the Theater an der Wien, for the first time by Eduard Strauss on September 11, 1874 in the Volksgarten. Johann had been in Italy in the meantime and was also temporarily in Graz. The quick polka takes its title from the “Clock Duet” between Rosalinde and Eisenstein in the second act of the operetta. The main theme “Tik-Tak” comes from this, but subsequently fragments from the scenes of the third act (chorus passage “Kein Verzeih'n, der Eistenstein”) and the second act (chorus “Wie fliehen so schnell die Stunden fort”), and even from Adele's couplet “Spiel ich die Unschuld vom Lande”, are inserted so artfully that the enchanting flow of melodies is self-evident. A masterpiece based on the motifs of the masterpiece «Die Fledermaus» (The Bat).
