In the autumn of 1888, Johann Strauss II returned to Vienna from his engagement in Russia at the end of November. His first contract with the Russian railway company, where he had conducted these events as its conductor, had expired, and nobody in Vienna really knew what Strauss was planning for the near future. The city was full of rumours: they concerned the artistic projects of the young music director, but above all the alleged or actual amorous adventures of the dashing artist. In addition, at the same time, a joke paper entitled "Tritsch-Tratsch“ (Chit-Chat) was founded in the imperial city. Johann Strauss II designed a polka titled "Tritsch-Tratsch" and brought it home from his trip to Russia. On November 24, 1888, he used the opportunity of a concert in the cozy setting of the "Zum Grossen Zeisig" establishment and performed this work there for the first time. There was cheering and commotion in the audience. A few weeks later the first edition of the amusing polka, which the publisher Haslinger had rushed to issue, was already sold out.
