Although he spent his musical life in the shadow of this two elder brothers, Eduard Strauss stamped his own particular genius on his fast polkas, of which three were inspired directly by his fascination for the still new-fangled railways. The best-known of these works - Bahn frei! - was written especially for the ball of the "Gentlemen Officials of the Royal and Imperial Apostolic Northern Railway", held in the Dianasaal Ballroom, Vienna, on 17 February 1869, and the piece bears a dedication to the Ball's organising committee. Text: Peter Kemo, 1978 The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain.
