Johann II's bubbling Champagner-Polka was first presented to the Viennese public on 21 November 1858, shortly after the composer's return home from his annual season of concerts in Pavlovsk, Russia. Always anxious to improve his standing with those of high rank, the thirty-three-year-old Strauss dedicated his Champagner-Polka to the Austrian Minister of Finance, Baron Carl von Bruck, and the work is clearly intended as a musical jest.
