The three-act operetta Waldmeister was the last but one work for the stage that was completed by Johann Strauss II. The libretto was written by Gustav Davis (real name Gustav David), who had been a co-author of the libretto of Jabuka (The Apple Feast), first performed in 1894. Waldmeister is set in a provincial town in Saxony, and its premiere took place in the Theater an der Wien on 4 December 1895. The work met with the approval of both the public and the press. Strauss conducted the overture himself, before handing over the baton to Adolf Müller junior, the theatre’s conductor, for the rest of the performance.
