On 2 February 1858 an ‘artists’ ball for all branches of art was held in the Sophiensaal establishment in Vienna, The dance music was provided by the Strauss Orchestra conducted by Johann Strauss II. He had been asked by the members of the ball’s organising committee to arrange a quadrille based on melodies by different composers to reflect the current concert season. Strauss accepted the commission and dedicated the desired quadrille to the artists for their ball. In fact this arrangement brings together all the catchiest tunes of the period. A Viennese quadrille consists of six sections, and in the following list the different musical themes are marked by raised numerals. Pantalon 1 u. 2 (Felix Mendelssohn: ‘Wedding March’ from the music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream); Pantalon3 (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: First subject of the first movement, Symphony no. 40 in G minor, K. 550); Été1 (Carl Maria von Weber: Oberon, Act II, no. 13, Rezia’s aria, ‘Huon! My husband, my love, we are saved,’ Été2 (Frédéric Chopin: Trio of the Funeral March from the Sonata in B flat minor, op. 35); Poule1 (Niccolò Paganini: Rondo ‘La Campanella’ from Violin Concerto no. 2 in B minor, op. 7), Poule2 (Giacomo Meyerbeer: Robert le Diable, Act I, ‘Sicilienne’, introduction and Robert’s aria, ‘O fortune! à ton caprice’), Poule3 (Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst: Second movement, Allegretto, from Der Carneval von Venedig, op. 18); Trénis1 (Carl Maria von Weber: Der Freischütz, Act II, Agathe, ‘Himmel nimm des Dankes Zähren’ [‘Leise, leise fromme Weise’]), Trénis2 (Jules Schulhoff: no. 1 ‘Chant du Berger’ from Trois Idylles, op. 23); Pastourelle1 (Franz Schubert: Widerspruch, D. 865, ‘Wenn ich durch Busch und Zweig’), Pastourelle2 (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Die Zauberflöte, Act I, opening of Papageno’s entrance song, ‘Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja’); Finale1 (Ludwig van Beethoven: ‘Turkish March’ from The Ruins of Athens, op. 113), Finale2 (Ludwig van Beethoven: Second movement from Violin Sonata no. 9 in A major, ‘Kreutzer’, op. 47).
