Under the eighty-two-year-old Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Austrian army, Count Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, the Habsburg troops had won a decisive victory over the Italian forces at Custozza in August 1848. Johann Strauss senior commemorated this significant event with his Radetzky-Marsch, which was first heard in the Vienna Wasserglacis on 31 August 1848, at a "Victory celebration to honour the courageous army in Italy, and for the benefit of the wounded soldiers". Composed in honour of Count Radetzy, the march is dedicated to the victorious Austrian army. Text: Peter Kemp, 1978 Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain.
