Johann Strauss (Sohn) verstand es wie kein anderer Operettenkomponist, die Melodien seiner Bühnenwerke auch als Konzert- und Tanzmusik zu arrangieren und zu verwerten. Dieses Beispiel wurde von seinen Kollegen bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein eifrig nachgeahmt, allerdings nicht mit der gleichen Effizienz. Strauss (Sohn) war eben der geborene Tanzkomponist. Die Schnellpolka «Tik-Tak» ist wie ein geniales Mosaik aus verschiedenen Melodien der Operette «Die Fledermaus» zusammengesetzt und wurde bald nach der am 5. April 1874 im Theater an der Wien erfolgten Uraufführung in den Strauss-Konzerten vorgetragen, erstmals am 11. September 1874 im k. k. Volksgarten durch Eduard Strauss. Johann war in der Zwischenzeit in Italien und hielt sich vorübergehend auch in Graz auf. Ihren Titel erhielt die Schnellpolka vom «Uhrenduett» zwischen Rosalinde und Eisenstein im zweiten Akt der Operette. Daraus stammt das Hauptthema «Tik-Tak», aber in der Folge werden Splitter aus den Szenen des dritten (Chorstelle «Kein Verzeih’n, der Eistenstein») und des zweiten Aktes (Chor «Wie fliehen so schnell die Stunden fort»), ja, sogar aus dem Couplet der Adele «Spiel ich die Unschuld vom Lande» so kunstvoll eingefügt, dass sich der hinreißende Fluss der Melodien von selbst ergibt. Ein Meisterwerk nach den Motiven des Meisterwerkes «Die Fledermaus».
