Strauss father's nimble Seufzer-Galoppe is a novelty composition dating from 1828, when the composer was twenty-four. The precise date and occasion of the work's first performance are not recorded, but it seems likely that it was first heard in August or September of that year at one of the Viennes locales where Strauss regularly performed. The 'sighing', from witch the piece derives its title, can clearly be heard in the four descending chromatic notes, which provide an unexpected 'breathing-space' during the galop's frantic mood.
