At the premiere of the operetta A Night in Venice in Berlin a rather silly passage in the lyrics of the ‘Lagoon Waltz’ had unleashed a storm of disapproval among some of the audience. Although subsequent performances were very successful and the work had a nothing less than triumphant reception in Vienna, Johann Strauss broke with F. Zell and Richard Genée, the librettists he had worked with for many years, the latter having also collaborated with him on musical matters. The decision to do so may have been in part due to Adele, the new woman at Strauss’s side.
